Exhibition until 5th March 2016 at Jean Fournier Gallery
What an enchanting discovery at Jean Fournier Gallery! Over twenty works on paper created between 1957 and 1975 by American painter Kimber Smith (1922-1981) are on display until March 5th.
This is quite a lucky find, as this painter – the companion of Sam Francis – has remained rather unnoticed until today, despite an important retrospective organised by the Kunstmuseum of Winterthur in 2004, and some solo exhibitions held in prestigious galleries such as Lawrence Gallery in Paris or Renée Ziegler Gallery in Zurich.
Saturated gouaches, dating from the late 50’s (Untitled, 1959), contrast here with delicate paintings, made later using aerosol and marker pens, (Untitled No. 230, 1968-1969). Spontaneity is key in the artist’s body of work. The rapid and rhythmic movement structures subtle geometric compositions, with coloured chunks straight out of the paint tube.
An exhibition leaving us under the spell!
