Louis STETTNER at the Pompidou Center until 12th Septembre 2016
Today at the age of 93, Louis Stettner has built a rich and intense photographic body of work fuelled by his encounters here and elsewhere, as titled by his retrospective at the Pompidou Center: Ici Ailleurs. For eight decades, the pulsating hearts of Paris and New York have been monitored click by click by this indefatigable image hunter born in Brooklyn, who has been living in the French capital since 1946. Being close to the humanist photo movement, he walked through the 20th century bright eyed and with his camera in hand.
From the deserted streets of Paris to the untamed landscapes of the Alpilles, the visitor’s gaze is absorbed by the gentle rays of the sun, the reflections of wet asphalt or the smoke coming out of a manhole. We uncover the poetry captured in the series Penn Station, and watch with emotion the journeys of two fishermen from Ibiza, Pepe and Tony, who the photographer followed for two days in 1956. A series bursting with strength and sensuality. Here again Louis Stettner has captured the grace of the instant.
An unmissable exhibition!
